Desert View Elementary
Switch Ports – Existing and Projected Growth

Existing Needs

The current Desert View LAN design plan assumes 58 fixed curriculum workstations, 49 fixed administrative workstations, and 192 portable curriculum workstations which could potentially be accessing the network at any given time. As described in the logical diagram and the cutsheet, each workstation is attached to a hub at the horizontal cross-connect. Each hub then uplinks to a switch port at the vertical cross-connect in each building, and each switch uplinks to the LAN switch in the main distribution facility. The quantity of switch ports used for the existing network is described as follows:

Projected Growth

As described in the User Expectations Document, the network is expected to be functional for seven to 10 years, with expected 100 times growth in LAN throughput. This can be achieved by replacing the existing curriculum hubs in each classroom with a Cisco 2950T-24 or similar switch, then microsegmenting to dedicate 100Mbps to each workstation. A single 24-port switch can be placed in each intermediate distribution facility for all administrative workstation ports in the building. The quantity of switch ports that will be required is described as follows:
